We interviewed Tiffany Bazán, Design Lead at Orbi Finance in Mexico City, whose career spans from early days inspired by ‘90s MTV chaos to building playful, purposeful design systems in fintech. Tiffany shares her journey from advertising to 3D illustration, her human-first leadership style, and why embracing uncertainty is key for emerging designers. With values such as authenticity, unity and joy, she’s shaping design that connects—and uplifts—people every day.
Can you share the moment or experience that sparked your passion for design?
My first encounter with design and animation was through MTV commercials from the ‘90s—they were so colorful and chaotic, and I absolutely loved them.
Can you tell us a little about your first few steps in your design career?
My first steps in my design career were in the advertising industry. Later, I transitioned to the financial sector, where I had the opportunity to further explore my approach to 3D in a more free and illustrative way.
What are the core values or philosophies that guide your creative practice?
My core values are Authenticity, Playfulness, and Unity.
Authenticity is essential to me both personally and professionally—it allows me to feel aligned, comfortable, and true to myself every day.
Playfulness: For me, design is my playground. If what I create can be both playful and fun while serving a purpose for the community, even better.
And finally, Unity—referring to the seamless integration of all elements in a harmonious way.
What lessons from your early career have most shaped your leadership style and approach?
I firmly believe that my leadership style is rooted in the human aspect. Having started in advertising, I encountered managers who saw my sensitivity as a weakness in this "tough industry." However, I never viewed it that way. On the contrary, sensitivity allows each person to create and express themselves in unique ways.
Now that I’m in a leadership position, my focus is on connecting with each team member based on their individual strengths, with respect and the freedom to contribute responsibly. Continuous feedback from both sides ensures that everyone feels heard, keeping us motivated to produce outstanding work every day.
What strategies do you employ to identify and create new opportunities for emerging designers?
I like to encourage play and exploration in new designers. Yes, design is about methodology, purpose, and solutions. But there’s nothing wrong with breaking the ice with explorations that focus on embracing the process and allowing ourselves to be surprised along the way.
What would you like to change in the design industry of your city?
In Mexico, design is gradually gaining more recognition; however, it still lags behind what we see in other countries. I believe there is a disconnect between the level of specialization and expertise required from designers and the salaries offered by industries.
Looking ahead, what do you think are the key factors that will shape the global design landscape?
I’d like to believe that what will truly continue shaping the creative landscape is the human factor—intentionality and the desire to connect with one another. At its core, design is communication, and we can all benefit from using it to address important topics and create a positive impact.
Tell us some of your favourite, creative people and inspiring places in your city!
Any place surrounded by nature is the most inspiring setting for me. I highly recommend visiting Bosque de Chapultepec, the city’s large parks, or spending a relaxed day at Biblioteca Vasconcelos.
People—basically all my friends. I’m incredibly lucky to learn from them constantly. My biggest inspirations are: @_byfiction @mitzicastillo @lenny__________maya
What should emerging designers keep in mind as they begin their design career?
It’s okay not to have all the answers—in fact, you won’t, haha, and that’s perfectly fine.
Newly graduated designers often focus too much on “finding their thing,” But the truth is, we’re always evolving. What excites you today might not tomorrow.
That’s why this is the perfect time to explore. We don’t have to lock ourselves into a single path—we build it day by day.
