Ronen Cohen

Designer and illustrator Ronen Cohen has worked on everything branding from illustration to mobile apps to creating his own font. He chatted to us about how the startup culture in Tel Aviv is great for designers, changing plans after graduation, and choosing a job you love.

Where did you study and what were some of your first jobs?

I have a Bachelor of Visual Communication from Bezalel Academy of Art and Design. Ever since then, I've worked at NGsoft Studio as an Art Director.

Did you have a plan for graduation and what actually happened?

My original plan was to move to Barcelona and do my master's degree with a friend. What actually happened was that I got a job offer that I couldn't refuse. So I'm still working there in Tel Aviv, and my friend is probably enjoying a nice sangria in front of the Sagrada Familia.

What's the worst design job you’ve ever had and how did it make you a better designer?

As a teenager, I used to sell stationery at a shop in Jerusalem. It was really boring, but that's how I knew all the best equipment an illustrator and designer could ask for!

How does the local culture of where you live affect your design work and getting clients?

Tel Aviv is full of startups and product companies. Once, those companies would ask a studio to design their products. Today, every company has its own in-house designers. That has led to a very high demand for designers and great conditions for designers to make more accurate and spectacular products.

What's the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.

What's on the cards professionally and personally in the next 12 months?

This year I want to develop the typography that I recently abandoned. My ambition is not only to create good illustrations or designs, but to make sure they work well together and complement each other.
