Relâmpago

We caught up with Leandro Assis and Romulo Pinheiro C.E.O and creative directors of Relâmpago! They filled us in on some of the naughty things they got up to when starting up the studio, what they're looking for in your portfolio and a little bit of advice for those starting out.

What carrier advice would you give your 16yr old self?

Be bold, focus on what you love to do, never stop trying different things. If you stick to the same methods, you will probably get to the same results (:

Give us the elevator pitch on what you do

We rule our world by combining illustrations and letters, applying it in art direction, branding, design + film. Talk to us! Beware: we don’t follow rules... and neither should you.

What three naughty things have you done in your career to get ahead?

1 - We had no money, so in the early days we rented a museum room, a doctor’s office and also worked from home for several months in order to save money to rent a proper studio.

2 - We love Starbucks, we met at all available ones in Rio (some out of Rio as well). Whenever we needed to make a decision or brainstorm, we headed to Starbucks.

3 - Once we did a burger project, and spent a whole week eating at burger restaurants and eating burgers, solely. All for “research purposes”.

What do you look for in a great portfolio?

Personality. We always look for something that make us fall in love. There are so many portfolios out there, you should question yourself what you have and other designers don’t. There’s always something, like the texts about the jobs you did that demonstrate your type of humour. You gotta find it and embrace it. Cut the mediocre stuff, always show your best and be sure that others know it.

Any passion projects/collabs you would like to share?

We’d love to collaborate with Snask and Golden Wolf. They’re our true romance since the beginning.

What do you look for in a great client?

We love clients that love what they are doing. Clients who set aside their personal tastes for the sake of their project, clients who see that you need design to make your project work, clients with no fear of NOs, and clients excited to learn about something they don’t know but they want to.
