Morgan Bastos

Meet Morgan Bastos—Graphic Designer & Art Director living in a small fisherman town in The Algarve, the south of Portugal. Morgan discussion the challenges of working in a small town where design is very underrated and misunderstood, he gives us his top five design crushes and a little insight into what's in store for the next 12 months.

What is the design landscape like on your city and where do you fit in?

I currently live in a small fisherman town in the Algarve - the south of Portugal. The biggest challenge I face every day with my work is trying to produce meaningful and straight forward projects in a place where design, in general, is very underrated and misunderstood. There’s a huge need for good design work where I live and I always try to partner with the local businesses that need that kind of help.

What's the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

I’m always reading design related articles/stories to improve my knowledge in the areas I love the most and I believe this quote from Massimo Vignelli I read a few months ago stuck with me and will always be on the top five of my rules list: “Never work for a bad client, the next one will be worse”.

Who are your top five design crushes globally right now?

This is a really difficult one to answer, but I would say my top five design crushes right now are:

  1. Brody Associates
  2. Semiotik
  3. Neubau
  4. OK-RM
  5. 6’56”

and so on…

What advice would you give students graduating in 2019?

I would tell the students to be as interested and curious as a person can be, never to be afraid of their own limits and seek to exceed them and to be faithful to their own style.

When a door closes, a window opens.

2019 for you in a sentence.

When a door closes, a window opens.

What's on the cards professionally and personally in the next 12 months?

First of all, I’d love to go on vacation (ahah!). The more serious part… I hope to get more freelance projects doing what I really love, improve my work as a graphic designer and maybe find the courage to run my own design studio with my “partner in crime”.
