McCall Keller

A big congrats to McCall Keller @macmosskeller, one of our 30 TDK Awards winners for 2020! Based in Los Angeles, United States and studying at Brigham Young University, McCall's work was chosen by Annie Atkins @annieatkins from Dublin: 'A beautifully executed portfolio almost entirely in monotone – Mac’s work doesn’t need colour to pop from the page. Each spread feels fully-realised and stylish, and includes a typeface design that has an intriguingly playful exposition on It’s facing page. A well-executed confident portfolio. Great!'

What do you wish you’d known now when you started your design course?

I was a clean slate going into design school and I think everyone should be in a sense. I grew up practicing traditional arts and studying art history, and the most experience I had had with design was a box of old helvetica letraset rub on letters that I put over some of my drawings. Being so fresh when I entered school meant that my professors were able to teach me correct design principles that have become the foundation of my design practice, instead of poor habits and ideas picked up from other sources.

What originally lead you in to design, and how has that changed - what do you want to do/are doing now?

Starting at a young age my dad was kind enough to introduce me to a wide range of creatives working in film, advertising and fine art. These people helped me see how to apply an interest in art and design into a paying career. I've been working at R/GA Los Angeles for about 6 months now. We have a small design team that I’m very grateful to be a part of.

Any hot tips for getting ahead at uni?

Study the history of design, especially that of the regions where you are interested in working. Also get really good at talking about the reasoning behind your work. That’s a big one.

What do you love about the design scene in your city and what companies are on your dream list to work or collaborate with?

I love being in a culture capital where people are pushing the boundaries of so many different mediums. I’m starting a 3 on 3 basketball tournament here in Los Angeles and the premise is that each tournament you have the opportunity to win a custom designed jersey by a different artist or designer. I’m hoping to collaborate with a wide range of creatives from the area and make some really unique jerseys.

Where do you see your career in 5 years?

Still here in Los Angeles, gearing up for the 2028 Olympics.

2020 for you in a sentence

A good year to play some 3 on 3.
