Max Malone

July 2018

Freelance Visual Artist & Designer, Max Malone is a Melbourne newbie! Originally from Bristol, England -- Max only made the move to Melbourne early 2018. We chat about making it work across different time zones, his fanatical passion with collaging and finding your place within the Melbourne scene.

Where did you study and what were some of your first jobs?

I studied Graphic Design in Bristol, England. It’s an amazing place to live and work, I found jobs straight after graduating, notably being commissioned to create a collage mural across a music venues bar facade. I also ran Collage Club, a collaborative art social for a number of years there too, the idea was to ‘stick paper and people together’.

Give us the elevator pitch on what you do.

I’m a freelance visual artist & designer, with a fanatical passion within the medium of collage; I cut & paste for both work and play. My evolving and ever-changing practice has led me in directions I couldn’t have foreseen, from working on large scale wallpapers, down to small tape cassette designs.

What does a typical working day include for you right now?

I never clock out, as I’ve clients both in the UK and a growing number here in Straya too, so I try to make myself available within everyones office hours! My day always involves lots of emails and pitching ideas to potential clients, but I also supplement my income working in bars a few nights a week.

What career advice would you give your 16yr old self?

Don’t be knocked back by the fact that not everyone will get/understand what you make and do; keep the faith in your passion and continue to work at what you love.

Any passion projects/collabs you would like to share?

I’m working a lot more these days with musicians which is great, having the freedom to visually explore and create to music is my favourite kind of work, currently working with Memotone, (Bristol) & The Cool Calm (Melbourne). I’ve also just finished a project with lettering artist Tom Lane aka @GingerMonkey but that hasn’t launched just yet!

What is the design landscape like on your city and where do you fit in?

I’m very new here to Melbourne, (just four months in), still trying to carve out my corner, the city is chockablock with talent, but I’m optimistic that I’m beginning the journey of integration.. but please get in touch Melbourne locals/businesses/creatives! I’m here and ready to get involved.

Please note these are paid full time or part time roles, so if you have a one off project to advertise, put it under our Freelance jobs dropdown instead. Thanks!

  • Welcome to our new section for freelance one-off jobs! To keep things simple, we want to connect you with the talent by advertising what you need, and encouraging people to email you directly with an example of their work. You can choose who to work with from all the submissions you receive. Everything is done online, and you can expect a designer to be dealing with you remotely. The good news is you won’t be limited to talent locally - this is advertised in each of our cities, meaning you will get a much higher standard of work to choose from. Picking a budget is very hard - we do not encourage work for a fiver like some websites, because you will end up with something worth a fiver!

Our community is full of the best emerging talent, and a average price should be around half of that of a professional. Our community is full of the best talent, and a average price should be around $65 p/h.
