Jarrad Burley

We had a chat to Jarrad Burley about his love for the design industry, working in Perth, and moving to Canada and his future plans in the film industry. We also get an insight into how rad it is to live in Vancouver!

Tell us about how you got started in the industry?

I got started in the industry through the love of branding and logos. As a kid I used to draw logos from surf and motocross brands such as Rusty, Hot Tuna, Mambo and FOX racing. I was really in to these sports and loved the way these brands approached the sports and how some of them integrated illustration into their branding, especially Mambo. I would eventually complete an advanced diploma in graphic design, majoring in illustration in 2008.

What does a typical working day include for you right now?

These days I am based in Vancouver, British Columbia. Typically I will wake up a bit late (I also work in a bar here), check emails and reply to any if work has come through. Currently I am freelancing and have regular work from a select number of clients here and abroad. If there is no work, I’ll ride my motorcycle up in to the woods and go for a hike. If there is work, I get cracking in my studio.

What are your go to blogs for inspiration?

I look at these blogs daily for inspiration for either art or design. Instagram - Yeah. I said it. But there are so many talented people using this application to show their art and design. Great for quick inspiration. ffffound.com - A long term daily favourite for visual inspiration. booooooom.com - Great fine art blog. Fecalface.com - Great low brow art/ illustration blog.Deadfix.com - Lifestyle & photography blog.

What qualities and skills to you look for in a graduate?

Someone who is eager, works hard, shows potential and is focused on becoming a better designer.

Whats on the cards professionally and personally in the next 12 months?

For the next 12 months I plan on staying in Vancouver and pursuing work in the film industry as a designer. I have done this previously and loved the pace of work and the exciting projects I get to work on. Also, I love to snowboard so as winter fast approaches, I look forward to getting back into the snow! I am also planning some trips to New York, Mexico and Japan for this year. Travel + design/ illustration = good times.
