Hannah Ahn

TDK Awards 16' winner, Hannah Ahn, tells us about her internship at Gretel, shares the 3 questions she always asks herself and her love for all those MTV graphics!

When did you fall in love with design and how did you get started?

Ever since I was little, I loved to watch television, especially “MTV”, it was one of my favorites. Whenever a show ended, a logo with the letters “MTV" popped up. It was a very short moment but I felt the letters were alive and the colors and sound effects added to the impact. I knew that it's called motion graphics and begun searching for schools with Motion Graphics Programs and decided to study abroad.

Where did you study and what were some of your first jobs?

I am a recent graduate with a degree in Design from School of Visual Arts in New York. After graduation, I started my internship at Gretelwhich is a modern design studio in NYC and now I am doing my first professional job as a freelance designer at Gretel. I work a wide range of design work but two main focuses are brand identity and visual interaction.

Dieter Rams, Karel Martens, Fredun Shapur, Eike König, and Jonny Johansson.

How did you develop your style as an illustrator and what tips would you have for others?

I keep asking myself a few questions, “Is it a reflection of myself?”, "Is there anything fun to do?”, “Is this something new?"

I hope I live and work in a foreign country, maybe Europe, in the next five years. I know it will take time to adapt to new surroundings, a new culture and a new lifestyle. But it will be a really refreshing experience to get in touch with myself and my field if I am in a new place.

Whats the big goal in the next five years?

I hope I live and work in a foreign country, maybe Europe, in the next five years. I know it will take time to adapt to new surroundings, a new culture and a new lifestyle. But it will be a really refreshing experience to get in touch with myself and my field if I am in a new place.

2016 for you in a sentence.

Do not trust anyone.
