We LOVE Thomas José Henri's dreamlike and inventive set-designs -- they're so fun and vivid. We chat with the From Brittany Art Director / Set Designer about working with his sister in Paris for Japanese brand Issey Miyake, his dad's print shop in Brittany, France; and that time he was in the shower and decided he would never go back to school.
Where did you study and what were some of your first jobs?
I have no diploma of any sort, I decided to leave school at 17yo so I started working with my sister for the luxury Japanese brand Issey Miyake in Paris, I was building all sort of crazy thing for fashion week show. I met really talented people and I realize I can do this for the rest of my life.
What was your plan for graduating and what actually happened?
My dad has a print shop in Brittany, France. So I planned to learn this work, but suddenly, I can remember I was in the shower when I decided to definitely stop school to learn something else by myself, I get out of the bathroom and told my roommate I won’t go to school anymore, he didn’t trust at the time but I really did never go to school again…
What do you look for in a great client?
A good client knows about your work and gives you full control on a project.
What have been some of your biggest disasters and how have you learnt from it?
My biggest failure was when I try to go back on a regular job as a studio manager, but then I start to feel useless and couldn’t live with a 9 to 5 weekday job. This experience was the last answer I needed to make sure I have to work on my own.
What career advice would you give your 16yr old self?
If you deeply trust in your choices, you’ll never regret it!
