Sergio Abstracts

We caught up with graphic designer Sergio Abstracts who chats to us about why he fell in love with design, how he's working on connecting the design community in Madrid, and how an open and collaborative relationship with clients is the key to the future in design.

Give us the elevator pitch on what you do.

I started designing when I was about 14 years old. The thing that made me fall in love with it was the capability to shape an idea into a visual thing.

Who are your top five design crushes globally right now?

Are you involved in any teaching, and if so, how does it shape your practice?

Yes, I am! We just launched Collision, a mentorship program where juniors meet senior and lead designers, who work together to develop a common project. At the moment, Collision is available only in Madrid, but we would love to expand and bring it to more cities. We just started but I expect to learn a lot about UX and UI design from my partner.

Where do you think design is heading in the next five years and how will you adapt?

I think design will turn into a more collaborative process, involving the client in many more phases of the project. I think the best way to adapt to this situation is to guide the client during the process, to teach them that graphic design isn’t just a symbol or some colors. I believe that you can go further and make your brand connect with your audience by inspiring, transforming and raising awareness.

What's on the cards professionally and personally in the next 12 months?

Personally, I think I’ll be in Madrid, making brands that inspire people and trying to expand the design community.

2019 for you in a sentence.

Stressful in a lovely way.
