Classmate Studio

June 2019

Meet the creative minds behind Classmate Studio. We have a short but sweet chat with József and the team about how they came together to form their studio and their goal to work for more non-profits.

Any hilarious stories about you as a kid being creative?

Well, as a kid several of us had to visit a psychologist because of our unusually gloomy and vivid drawings. Think- A bloody fight between the sun, mountains, and clouds or drawing massive black holes for some time.

Did you have a plan for graduation and what actually happened?

We did several pitches together for competitions and commission work during uni and so we hoped to continue to do this after graduating. We hoped that if all went well we would form our own collective or studio and here we are.

How did you name your practice and what does the name represent to you?

After pitching many ideas for the name we went with Classmate because it was so very fitting, cheery and simple. It described our origin, how we met and the mutual trust and friendship we share. Plus it sounded catchy.

"

If you feel stuck stop working and go out with your friends, read, take a walk or anything. Sometimes it's just better to sleep on it.

"

Is there an active design community in your city and who are your favourite top 5 designers/studios/organisations our readers can check out?

There is a rather nice young design community here and in our sister studio in Budapest. A lot of young designers decide to get together and do their own thing, their own studio. That is pretty inspiring. You should Also definitely check out L2, Ockto and Explicit.

What's the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

If you feel stuck stop working and go out with your friends, read, take a walk or anything. Sometimes it's just better to sleep on it.

What do you think the design community could do more to give back?

An idea we really like is to work for non-profit organisations. Or basically, any cause one feels passionate about and supports.

  • We love jobs! And so does our audience. Because our following is mostly students and graduates, the best jobs to advertise are for junior and mid weight roles. • Welcome to our new section for freelance one-off jobs! To keep things simple, we want to connect you with the talent by advertising what you need, and encouraging people to email you directly with an example of their work. You can choose who to work with from all the submissions you receive. Everything is done online, and you can expect a designer to be dealing with you remotely. The good news is you won’t be limited to talent locally - this is advertised in each of our cities, meaning you will get a much higher standard of work to choose from. Picking a budget is very hard - we do not encourage work for a fiver like some websites, because you will end up with something worth a fiver!

Our community is full of the best emerging talent, and a average price should be around half of that of a professional. Our community is full of the best talent, and a average price should be around $65 p/h.
