Braulio Amado

We recently got to hang out with hilarious Graphic Designer/Illustrator Braulio Amado, throw back a few Malibu shots and talk all about creating stuff, drawing every day and the mania of New York City.

When did you fall in love with design and how did you get started?

I fell in love with designing before I knew what design was, really. From a young age I wanted to "create" stuff — websites, covers for bands, posters, artwork. And I was doing it for fun while I was in high school, I downloaded photoshop and dreamweaver and learned my way through it. When I got to my last year of high school I realized that's what I wanted to do for real, so went to college.

Give us the elevator pitch on what you do.

Hello, my name is Braulio Amado and I'm a graphic designer. Actually, I'm more of an illustrator. Or maybe a designer and illustrator. Yes I also do some animation. I also paint, but I'm not really an artist. Ok this is my floor, I have to run, nice to meet you; here's my business cards — oh no, I forgot my business cards at home.

Who are your top five design crushes right now?

How did you develop your style as an illustrator and what tips would you have for others?

Draw, draw, draw, draw, draw everyday. The more you draw the more shortcuts you will find to execute your ideas visually, and those shortcuts will eventually become what will be your style. Focus on ideas and how you tell them graphically, rather than if it looks good or not.

What is the design landscape like on your city and where do you fit in?

New york is a maniac city where everyone works too much. But there's a productive feel in the air and most people have to be passionated about what they do in order to submit themselves to the expensive and stupid lifestyle this city demands. I try to fit in the middle of all of this, trying to be productive and do things that mean something.

2018 for you in a sentence.

Uuuuuuuuuuggggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh the world is a mess.
