Featured Illustrators

Auf Wiedersehen

March 2014

Jacqueline Smith is a illustrator from Melbourne – with a whimsical, mystical and down right lovely aesthetic. She constantly pushes herself to be better, work harder and keep producing beautiful work.

Tell us about some of the illustrators you work with.

I’ve been lucky enough to have an exhibition called HULDUFÓLK last year with two of my loveliest art pals; Aaron Billingsand Julia Trybala. It was a really nice couple of months setting up and getting to know each other and eating burritos. I’ve done a few swaps with other creatives -- something I really enjoy – such as Miso, Stephanie Somebody, Holly Leonardson, Cat Rabbit, Carla McRae, Julia Trybala and Aaron Billings which is always fun. I’m always up for new collaborations and meet-ups.

Who are your top 5 creatives who inspire you?

Top of the list, easily, is Stanislava Pinchuk/Miso. She is a total force and never stops inspiring me. Stephanie Stamatis (Stephanie Somebody)has the best eye for the tiniest little details and takes beautiful photos. Holly Leonardson is a really good pal who will be the nicest artist you’ll ever meet (no, seriously!). Her colour palette/material choices are so brave and always work so well. Belinda from Alchemy – her weavings inspired from the palettes she collects from nature are beautiful. Lisa Gorman, in terms of design and execution of ideas, is super inspiring -- her clothes are incredible. Women are totally rocking the Australian art scene at the moment, and I’m really proud to be a part of that in any way that I can.

What are your personal and professional goals for 2014?

It’s simple; work harder! I have a hard time motivating myself and being brave and getting things done. Self-doubt is my biggest enemy and this year I really want to push past that. I also want to learn some jewellery making techniques, like casting and working with precious materials.

Hardest part of being an illustrator and your own boss?

Setting your own prices and being confident in them. Also, keeping to an organized work schedule out of a studio.

And the best parts of being an illustrator and your own boss!
Having the freedom to collaborate with new and exciting people and projects.

What is the best advice you've been given?

Don’t be afraid of colours (although I’m still learning).

Picking a budget is very hard - we do not encourage work for a fiver like some websites, because you will end up with something worth a fiver!

Our community is full of the best emerging talent, and a average price should be around half of that of a professional. Our community is full of the best talent, and a average price should be around $65 p/h.
