Ashley Goodall

December 2013

Ashley Goodall is studying at Billy Blue College of Design in Brisbane City. She starts her last semester in February - here are her plans, inspirations and lessons learnt!

Whats your plan for when you finish?

To be honest I’m not 100% sure, I’d like to spend my last semester working really hard to build a versatile skill set and let that show through my professional portfolio. I think it’s wise to make as many friends (connections) in the industry as possible and remain hardworking and genuine throughout my career endeavours. I would love to study abroad and get a little out of my comfort zone to see how far I can push my creativity.

Dream job in Australia?

One of my biggest interests is Human Centred Design, so it would be very dreamy to work at a place that’s doing things like Ideo in Australia. I feel as though it’s a really important facet of the design world and there needs to be just as many Human Centred Designers as there is Editorial Designers or Typographers etc. It would be my dream to be in a job where I was able to apply my knowledge to create innovative, functional things that change peoples lives.

Where do you go for inspiration? (online and offline)

I take inspiration from many different things that exist within and outside of the creative world. The best way for me to stay inspired is to stay as busy as I possibly can; whether that be design, illustration, creative writing, writing music or simply just chatting to people. I feel that way your able to be more immersed in a wider spectrum of stuff and therefore become uninspired with specific things (i.e. visual design) less frequently.  I think it’s important to view design work online, but I try not to get caught up in looking too deep to try to avoid unknowingly creating something that looks like everything I’ve gathered onto my Pinterest board. Mind you Pinterest is great.

Any personal projects you have to share?

Over the summer, I’ve been trying to build as much content as I can for my final portfolio. Other than that I have been writing music with my friends in a band called “Salvadarlings” which you can find on SoundCloud. I enjoy it  because I get to do the artwork as well.

If you weren't a designer, what would you be/do?

If I wasn’t a designer I think I would still be undergoing some form of creative pursuit. I’d like to and have always wanted to be a writer, so I think I would be studying creative writing somewhere in Brisbane. I think if I wasn’t studying design (or in general) I would be traveling overseas due to the abundance of money I would probably have from having time to work and actually saving money.

  • We love jobs! And so does our audience. Because our following is mostly students and graduates, the best jobs to advertise are for junior and mid weight roles. Specially graphic design, digital design, typography and illustration. Please note these are paid full time or part time roles, so if you have a one off project to advertise, put it under our Freelance jobs dropdown instead. Thanks!

  • Welcome to our new section for freelance one-off jobs! To keep things simple, we want to connect you with the talent by advertising what you need, and encouraging people to email you directly with an example of their work. You can choose who to work with from all the submissions you receive. Everything is done online, and you can expect a designer to be dealing with you remotely. The good news is you won’t be limited to talent locally - this is advertised in each of our cities, meaning you will get a much higher standard of work to choose from. Picking a budget is very hard - we do not encourage work for a fiver like some websites, because you will end up with something worth a fiver!

Our community is full of the best emerging talent, and a average price should be around half of that of a professional. Our community is full of the best talent, and a average price should be around $65 p/h.
