Bobby Haiqalsyah is a multidisciplinary designer, illustrator, and lettering artist with over a decade of experience crafting brand identities across cultural and corporate sectors.

With roots in Indonesia and a deep love for type, Bobby’s work blends strategic thinking with expressive visual storytelling—often drawing on his heritage, love of food, and passion for dance. From leading teams to shaping labels, spaces, and narratives, his approach is both thoughtful and hands-on.

He’s the founder of Melbourne Lettering Club and a mentor dedicated to nurturing creative communities.

Day One

Foundations of Type
& Hand Lettering

Introduction & Warm-Up

Overview of type fundamentals (structure, contrast, spacing). Quick sketching exercises for muscle memory.

Anatomy of Letters & Styles

Understanding letterform construction and proportions. Exploring different styles (serif, sans-serif, script, display).

Hand Lettering Basics

Tools and techniques (brush pens, pencils, markers). Stroke control and rhythm in letterforms.

Composition & Layout

Balancing negative space and structure. Creating lettering compositions with intent.

Your Personal Lettering Project

Developing an original phrase or wordmark. Feedback session with peer review.

Day Two

Vector Lettering & Digital Refinement

Introduction to Digital Lettering

Vector vs. raster – best practices for smooth curves.
Essential Illustrator tools for lettering.

Digitising Sketches

Tracing techniques (manual vs. auto-trace).
Refining paths, adjusting curves, and maintaining balance.

Adding Personality & Depth

Texture, shadows, and embellishments.
Color exploration and contrast techniques.

Finalising & Presentation

Polishing details and exporting for different uses.
Showcase and group critique.

Please note: All students will be supplied with paper, brush and calligraphy pen, pencil and eraser. Each student must bring their own laptop with Adobe Illustrator.
