We'll admit it: we're pin crazy like the rest of the world, and our TDK Vancouver gang are teaming up with the amazing Angie Coates to talk all about enamel pin creation for our next #TDKtuesdays. Here we chat to Angie about her inspiration behind opening her online store Five15 (Her rescue pitbull, Meatball!), selling 'Dog Mum' pins to support rescue dogs and starting the day with coffee and podcasts.
Just like us Tierney Milne is a big fan of bold colours and graphic shapes! Studying both Psychology and Illustration Tierney loves bringing feelings or ideas to life excited by being able to experiment. Intentionally not wanting to pigeon hole herself, Tierney's work doesn't necessarily fit into one category or another.
Having a genuine connection with people has inspired Oli's passion projects—creating beautiful portraits with other creatives. MNSTR Gallery is part studio part gallery where Oli exhibits her work alongside her partner Ben with the plan to showcase more creatives.
Very Good Creative Co
At Very Good Creative Co they use mix of art and science when taking on a creative brief. Nick Adams talks with us about his about desire, frustration, and some top lessons he's learnt along the way with the "Very Good" title on his door!
We talk to Thomas Albrighton, Designer and Partner at Brief, about first job expectations, his design process, and entrepreneurial skills! As the only graphic designer at his first job, Thomas found it challenging when it came to problem solving; not having anyone else to bounce ideas off of. Now, at Brief, some of their best projects have been the result of collaboration - All right stop, Collaborate and listen (Ice Ice, Baby).
Bully Design Co.
Seriously one of the funnier/ all over the place interviews we have done in a while here at TDK - The hilarious Matt Salik, from Bully Design Co originally fell in love with the patch on he's dads overalls when he was a kid, while also growing up looking at he's brothers skateboard deck graphics from a distant (and only riding it secrectly to avoid getting bashed from big bro)!
We spoke with Owner/Creative Director of Burnkit - Dylan Staniul . Telling us how categories for design terms are out of date, to embrace deadlines and enjoy the pressure of coming up with new ideas. While also how design is not art.
Kristian Hay was always pretty analytical and academically driven as a kid up until he was in eighth grade or so, it was skateboarding that exposed him to a whole new mix of creativity. Making money from design at the tender age of 15, Kristian was already stocking shirt merch in retail stores all around Vancouver! Kristian tells us about the new Vancouver Mural Fest, some great podcasts, 5 current design crushes and also while most hate dealing with social media, to make the most of what it has to offer us as creative!
Julia Iredale was originally more interested in writing stories before she hit her teens and getting into visual arts. She spends half the week working for a print publication doing layouts and ad designs, and part time for herself working on freelance illustration projects. Julia talks to us about how she is always trying to make her digital work and her traditional painting practice intertwine with each other.
Glasfurd & Walker
We got to speak with the guys from Glasfurd & Walker, formally based in Sydney but these days are residing in Vancouver about the importance of a great personal brand when viewing portfolios. Also the excitement of being in a city that has a emerging scene along with other interesting topics.
