Get the low down on your fav Perth creatives, how they started out and if they’re hiring!
We loved chatting with graphic artist Adrian du Buisson (aka. WIldergrim)! We spoke about having clients passionate about what they do, his first design job, how he got it and what he learned, and the influences that have made it into his work (kids cartoons, sci-fi, toy packaging — now I've told you, can you see it?)
We're big fans of Martin Maher from Zebra because he believes "The more we can give back as experienced designers the better really". Martin also fills us in on who he's crushing on in the design world AND even compares being a designer to Wolverine! (you'll have to read on to find out why)
We had a lovely old chat with Illustrator Jae Criddle about working cafe jobs alongside artwork gigs, how Instagram makes a very solitary practice seem less so (that's why we LOVE Insty), and her struggle with her first ever exhibition - 'I found it hard to fill a room with enough pieces I was happy with'. Now, however, she's super pumped about organising a bigger and better show! Go Girl!
TDK Awards 16' winner, Joseph Dennis, tells us about how he reached out to the top Perth designers in his final week of study and landed a job, and suggests we all start judging books by their cover!
Illustrator/Designer and cool dude, Chris Nixon, gives it to us straight - Learn all the boring admin stuff, don’t be a jerk, and just enjoy. Production will kick off in early 2017 for his animated children’s series, he has plans to open a collaborative studio, plus... you know... he's having a baby. (Congrats!)
Aimee Chappell was always the one in primary school turning boring A4 reports into crazy A1 posters with the brightest coloured card you’d ever seen! She tells us who are her top five design crushes right now, how busting your balls, working hard, taking risks and it will all pay off. Also she gives us some great insight into where she believes design is heading in the next five years.
When TDK caught up with WA icon designer/illustrator, Brook Wells, he talked podcasts, stalking pinterest and Disney quotes. He's come a long way from a TDK Folio Coaching session back in 2013 - this year he's been talking to people who design for Disney, Facebook and Oculus rift. Impressed!! Thanks for taking the time to chat to us Brook...
Picked by SouthSouthWest for TDK's 16 for 2016, Ryan Vincent is currently working at one of our fav Perth studios, LivingBrand. He crushes on Sydney folk Jason Little, Monster Children, and Chris Doyle, has taken part in TDK shows and has five hot tips for current students. Tidy slick work and a healthy design attitude, nice one Ryan!
Yeah we get to shoot the shit with Mira Mayne of Perth based freelancer and recent grad from Shillington's Melbourne campus. Mira tells us why stepping away from the computer is important and she reminds us that mistakes are inevitable and that they are the key to the learning process.
We get the chance to catch-up with fresh Curtin University grad and budding typographer, Matthew Wong. Matthew was feature on our Top 15 Design to Watch for 2015! Matthew, who lives in wonderful Perth, tells us about his career highlights so far, how he spends his days and what rock god inspired him to become a designer.

Clustering the planter boxes into groups for particular artists ensures a rhythmic pattern of visuals that meaningfully create sight-lines or art pathways within the area” said Margaret Moore, Historic Heart Art Curator.Explore the planter boxes now and reacquaint yourself with Perth’s east end – the Historic Heart of Perth. We can’t change the number of hours we have in a day. But we can change the energy we bring to those hours. That’s why I do my best to get a good dose of quality sleep (more on that to come) and make sure I exercise every day. But I’ve noticed there are days ...
Billy Blue Blog
In 1987, Billy Blue Creative decided to open a tiny design school to train people who would eventually work in the studio. A crowd of about four was expected. Sixty-six people enrolled and there was a long waiting list. In essence, the school was created by industry for industry and we’ve been building on that concept ever since.
