New York–based designer Lingfei Cao, winner of the TDK 2025 Multi-Disciplinary Award, brings a thoughtful, system-driven approach to storytelling across print, digital, and experimental media. A graduate of Pratt Institute’s MFA in Communication Design and the China Academy of Art, Lingfei blends publication design, typography, and emerging tools with a calm, intentional focus that underpins her expanding creative practice.

Tell us about where you study/studied and some of your highlights and favourite lecturers and if you are self taught, how did you do it?!

I graduated with an MFA in Communication Design from Pratt Institute in 2023, after completing my BFA in Visual Communication Design at the China Academy of Art. Two professors who had a big impact on me were Natasha Chandani and Scott Vander Zee, their classes introduced me to the world of publication design and typography, and really shaped how I think about visual systems and storytelling.

Tell us about your tools / what tech, programs, equipment and environment do you do your best work in?

I work across the full Adobe suite and Figma, and I love experimenting with new tools and processes, including a bit of coding when the project calls for it. I do my best work in a quiet, uninterrupted environment. Having that focus allows me to fully dive into the details, refine ideas, and think more deeply about the design decisions I’m making.

Tell us some of your favourite, creative professionals and inspiring places in your city!

One of my favorite parts of working in New York is how endlessly inspiring the city feels. The creative energy here is everywhere, and I’m constantly motivated by studios like Collins and Porto Rocha, whose work always pushes boundaries.

The city itself is a huge source of inspiration, too. Even just walking down the street, you’re surrounded by thoughtful design, from stickers and storefronts to posters and billboards. I also love spending time at Printed Matter to browse new publications and see what other designers are experimenting with.

What are your biggest hopes and dreams for 2026, both for the world and your career?

I hope I can continue doing the work I love and keep growing through the projects I take on.
