Adam West, the Creative Director of Breeder, tells us about his creative career and Breeder’s newest global scale adventures. For those of you who don’t know, Breeder is the motion design studio responsible for the incredible Analogue Digital opening titles for the last two years. A must read for all motion lovers.
Tell us a little about your career, where you’ve worked, your roles, pivotal moments along the way. I’ve had a fantastically diverse career path that’s allowed me to make a living doing the things I love. After school I pursued photography for a few years until I discovered climbing. For the next seven years, I gained an enormous amount of experience as a manager, instructor, coach, facilitator and route setter – all of which led me to open my own indoor climbing centre, Urban Climb. After four years of this it was time for me to step back into a more creative role and I embarked on a seven year journey as a commercial photographer, which evolved into videography – leading me to be where I am today, Creative Director at Breeder.
For those who don’t know, can you tell us more about Breeder, how many people, clients and type of work you specialise in? Breeder is a motion design studio based in Brisbane. We focus on creating short form content by combining our skills of direction, film, design, animation, illustration and more. We blend art, technology and philosophy together to produce work we’re insanely proud of.
What advice do you have for students starting out in a creative career? Explore, experiment, listen, reflect and repeat. Do this your entire career and let your passions guide and shape your creativity. And always have a side project that allows you to take risks – it’ll pay off at some point.
You’ve done the A/D opening titles for the last two years. Now it’s taking over four cities, what can we expect to see this year? We’ve had such a great relationship with Analogue Digital over the last three years. It’s a fantastic event and we love creating their titles. This year’s opening sequence will be… Sorry, no clues! You’ll just have to come along and experience the audio/visual feast first-hand.
What are your favourite things to do in Brisbane town and your favourite creatives up there? Ahh, Brisbane. I’m actually writing this from Los Angeles and really looking forward to coming home. I think it’s always time spent away from home that reminds you just how many truly amazing things are happening. Some of our favourite creatives are those at our sister company, digital design studio Josephmark – I love that Brisbane is full of people doing what they love, making their dreams come true and sharing that passion with the people around them.
What’s next up for Breeder in 2014?
Recently we’ve made some really wonderful friends in Australia, the UK and the States, so we’re pretty excited to be playing and creating on a global scale. Our AD titles as well as collaborating with Antibody on the True Detective sequence have been phenomenal in attracting international interest and recognition, and at the moment we’re focused on continuing to produce amazing content, exploring new relationships and loving the hell out of motion.
