TDK is slightly different to most online design communities. We believe connections must be made human-to-human and we encourange more in person initiatives than digital ones, like our meet-up #TDKtuesdays.
When it came to building NEW communities outside the original Australian ones, Frankie and the crew hit the road to physically travel to each place; interviewing designers, talking at design schools and going to local design events, committing to a six year road trip around the globe!
2017: TDK EUROPE (#TDKeurope)
This year we’ll be hitting up 16 countries and 24 cities! Follow the trip via Instagram @frankieratford #TDKeurope and please reach out to bonjour [at] thedesignkids.org (with your city in the subject line), if you would like us to talk, drink coffee with you or if you would like to show us around – we’d love that!
2016: TDK CANADA
After Sunny the RV broke down, Frankie was forced to get creative – including flying a very small 1960’s Cessna over the west coast on Canada, 3-day trains, buses and boats. She made it back to Portland to finish the loop around the US and Canada in 18 months.
2015 & 2016: TDK USA
2015: TDK NEW ZEALAND (#TDKnz #TDKthumbsup)
Early 2015 we spent 10 weeks on the road hitch hiking across NZ! The goal – to meet as many creatives as possible, build our new NZ site and not get murdered! We launched an international Instagram typography competition for designers to create our hitchhiking signs with 500+ entries globally, which finished up in Auckland with a big exhibition to showcase all the amazing type from around the world, with the spotlight fully on NZ, design and incredible destinations.

2014: TDK AUSTRALIA (TAS ONLY)
In 2014, TDK finished up the Australian leg of the tour with a month travelling around Tasmania, to tie in with the AGDA Awards taking place at MONA in Hobart that year.
2013: TDK AUSTRALIA
In 2013, Frankie brought TDK an awesome 1983 Toyota Hiace and hit the road! The project went for 5 months, with over 11,000km and was completely self funded. We spoke at over 30 universities and design colleges across Australia and met with many of the top Creative Directors from Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. We also drank a lot of beers and hang out with students and grads country wide. We had an absolute blast – check the video for a quick overview and check out the work from the shows we facilitated whilst on the road – THREESOME. Yeah!
